The difference between Chinese and Western sleep habits

Blog >>

Chinese love to take a nap and this is very rare to see in the western countries. Besides Athens and Jerusalem and other places of the elderly, there are few Westerners have a habit of taking a nap.

The difference between Chinese and Western sleep habits

Why Chinese are more tend to choose to take a nap than Westerners? Simply speaking, it is possible that taking a nap is more related to food habits. Chinese intake the protein too less and intake carbohydrate too much. These cause postprandial reactive hypoglycemia, fatigue and lack of sleep.

Now, Chinese food carbohydrate accounted for total calorie intake, 2/3 approximately, which main food are refined white noodles, white steamed bread and white rice. All of them look like pure and healthy, but the elements of them are lack of nourishment. The blood glucose index is above 80 which is as high as pure sugar. In other words, it means the effect of postprandial blood glucose are the followings, 100 grams of refined rice equivalent to 80 grams of glucose or 100 grams of sugar.

Chinese are following the rules “The breakfast is good, the lunch is full, the dinner is few”. First, we eat a lot during lunch time. Second there are too much carbohydrate when we have lunch. Third, the blood glucose index is too high after having lunch. As a result, the total blood glucose load is very large, and its changes as quick as the roller coaster. The rapid of blood sugar rise a lot in our body, and stimulates a large number of insulin secretion, so that blood sugar rapid decline quickly at the same time during 30 minutes to 45 minutes. And it is down to the lowest after 2-3 hours. The dropping of blood sugar will make you feel sleepy and lack of energy.

The traditional Westerners treat meat as the main food for daily diet. They don’t eat too much during lunch. The glycemic index of meat is close to zero. The blood sugar is relatively stable after lunch and won’t raise or decline a lot at the same time.

In addition, carbohydrates (sugar and starch) burns fast and can only maintain the body's energy for two or three hours, while the fat and protein burn slowly and can provide energy for body for five or six hours. The differences between them are more like using diesel and gasoline.

Chinese think that taking naps can make life longer. Actually, it perhaps never make sense.

The survey of Israel University Hospital found that take a nap will increase the mortality of cardiovascular diseases. It will also shorten the life. The Columbia University study shows that the rapid decline in cardiovascular stress, and wake up rapidly, prone to cardiovascular diseases. That means that taking a nap makes pressure on blood raising a lot and decline a lot when you wake up. When movement and sleep rapidly alternating, heart and blood pressure will be like a roller coaster fluctuations, which means it is easy to break away from the track.

Therefore, we should follow the rules below: first, we should eat as less as possible to have sugar and starch. Second, we should more tend to have food which includes more fat and protein. Third, we should supply elements of vitamins and minerals. Fourth, drink less coffee and wine. All these stimulants will make body into readiness and overdraft and consumption of your strategic nutritional reserves. Fifth, try to change your diet and eat less but more times. You have to eat something after 7 hours on average. Sixth, you have to have breakfast. If you don’t have breakfast, it means you have gas yourself for 15-18 hours. Some brain cells will be damaged or going to die, and the memory also decrease.
